Vol. 2 No. 3 ....... Cover: Appropriately, the cover of this issue carries a color reproduction of a North American SNJ-2 scout trainer in flight over a vast expanse of blue Atlantic ocean. Thus it represents the old element and the new element for Naval operations, and points home the now generally recognized fact that, to be successful, a Naval force must control the skies above as well as the sea below. The U. S. Navy has long recognized the importance of air power, and this issue of SKYLINE is respectfully dedicated to the expanding program of Naval air training. Vol. 2 No. 4 ....... Cover: Before the architect set drawing pencil to paper to design the Texas plant of North American, his instructions were, "Give us something that is functional and decorative, something with both beauty and durability." The cover of this issue is an illustration of the architect's replya Kodachrome photograph by Clay Chapen of the facade of the administration building, depicting its simplicity of design and harmony of color. A bomb baffle alongside and a blackout canopy overhead, the doorway offers rugged access to the administration building. The facade is finished in three colors with terra cotta bomb baffle and pylons, stainless steel panel, and aluminum decorative strips. Vol. 3 No. 1 ....... Cover: A frequent sight, and a reassuring one these days, is that of armed American aircraft cruising overhead. Among these war-planes, the North American B-25 medium bomber occupies an eminent position, having proved time and again by its speed and maneuverability that it has the stuff of which champions are made. Since this issue of Skyline is dedicated to North American's new bomber assembly plant at Kansas City, Kansas, it is fitting that the cover should feature a picture of the B-25. In the words of Lieut. General Henry H. Arnold, Deputy-Chief of Staff, United States Army, " . . . this hard-hitting member of our striking power is one of the speediest bombers in the world, with a speed approaching that of the standard fighter planes in use abroad." The advertisement on the back cover, captioned "Another North American First," tells in brief the inspiring story of North American's new Kansas City unit. Vol. 3 No. 2 ....... Cover: This Month's cover picture might have been taken over the English channel coast, for North American Mustangs, one of which is shown here in the camouflage of the R. A. F., are being manufactured for the British. Actually, however, the ship was photographed in Kodachrome by SKYLINE Photographer Sherwood Mark as it cruised swiftly above the clouds of Southern California. This, the original Mustang, designated the NA-73, was designed for the R. A. F. With minor modifications, it has been accepted by the U. S. Army Air Forces as the P-51. The Allison-powered pursuit's trim lines and sleek streamlining are indicative of its high performance. Vol. 3 No. 3 ....... Cover: Army Acceptance of a B-25 is a frequent occurrence at the Inglewood plant these days, but it is not every day that a three-star general chalks up the final OK. This month's cover picture was taken April 16 when Lieut. Gen. William S. Knudsen, chief of production for the War Department, visited the Inglewood plant. Genial "Big Bill," beloved and respected production genius, who visited North American as part of a tour of war plants across the United States, said of NAA: "You have one of the finest production shows in the nation." The picture is a four-color process reproduction of a Kodachrome by SKYLINE Photographer Sherwood Mark.
