Vol. 2 No. 3 ....... Cover: This month's cover was painted for Sea Power by L. H. Greer, who, though self-taught except for six months of formal art training at the National Academy of Design, has made a name for himself in the world of advertising art. Born in Schenectady, he became interested in airplanes when an Army "DH-4" was forced down on a farm near the General Electric Company plant where he was then working. As an aviation enthusiast, he likes living at Hempstead, Long Island, where nearby Mitchel Field and Roosevelt Field provide planes to study and sketch. For the last twelve years he has specialized in paintings of aircraft. Following are the planes which appear on the cover. 1. Curtiss P-36 pursuit; 2. Vought F4U-I, world's fastest naval fighter plane; 3. Curtiss P-40 pursuit and interceptor; 4. Vought SO2U-I, naval scout observation plane; 5. Bell YFM-1, "Airacuda" fighter; 6. Vol. 3 No. 1 ....... Cover: When we asked Lieutenant Commander Barclay to paint us a cover that would be suitable for an issue largely devoted to the various aspects of the Navy Medical Corps, he telephoned the Brooklyn Naval Hospital and asked them to send him a nurse who would pose. They sent Margaret Jane Vassar, who came to the Navy via Barnert Memorial Hospital, in Paterson, N. J., and Buchanan, Va. She's been a nurse for 4 years and a Navy nurse for 5 months. Her ambition is to get out to the fighting fronts. When McClelland Barclay asked her about the men she nurses, her eyes flashed. "They're great," she said. Vol. 3 No. 2 ....... Cover: If, when you first looked at this month's cover, you came to the conclusion that McClelland Barclay was simply exercising his "artistic license" in painting the ammunition in gaudy colors, please take notice that you were wrong. Naval guns, such as the 5-inch piece depicted, are called upon to attack a variety of targets and the type of ammunition used varies widely. For example, shrapnel is frequently employed when bombarding shore positions; armor-piercing shells in duels between warships: anti-aircraft in fighting off enemy bombers. In order to make certain that no mistakes are made even in the heat of battle, all shells have distinctive colors or markings which indicate their type and bursting charge. Thus, armor-piercing shells are painted black; shrapnel, white; high explosive, yellow; gas, red; anti-aircraft and bombardment, green; while target practice ammunition is unpainted. A white band indicates that the shell carries tracers. Naturally, many combinations are possible. A shell might have a yellow nose and a red base, its case black. This would indicate that it was an armor-piercing, high explosive, gas shell. Now you have enough information to find out for yourself what type of shell the young man on our cover is holding. ....... Articles Inside: ... Out of the Mail Buoy ..... Vol. 3 No. 3 ....... Cover: The Navy Girl on the cover of this issue of Sea Power is Virginia Gundacker; the other is Anne Lehr. Both were among the first to enlist when the naval services opened their ranks to women. Miss Gundacker, born in Brooklyn, N. Y., graduated from high school five years ago, went to her first job in a magazine publisher's office in New York, left that when Pearl Harbor was attacked and joined the Sperry Gyroscope Co. as a private secretary. Even that wasn't active enough to suit her patriotic desire, her father having been a Navy radioman in the first World War and her heart-interest being a Navy aviation machinist in this one, so she joined the WAVES last September. Miss Lehr, of Lebanon, Pa., later of Bethlehem, Pa., was graduated from Moravian College for Women two years ago, after a two-year course. Her first job was as a secretary in the coal mining business, then, after the Pearl Harbor assault, she went to defense work as a secretary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. Craving action, she entered the armed services last October to be "on her own" and to contribute her direct bit to winning the war. These two, in their background and desire to help Uncle Sam, are typical of the rank and file of WAVES and SPARS, the women's special services of the Navy and Coast Guard. ....... Sea Power 1944 01
Vol. 4 No. 1 ....... Cover: Late in the afternoon of February 20, 1942, Lieutenant Edward H. O'Hare became an ace on a single flight. Flying a Grumman "Wildcat" from the carrier Lexington, Lieut. O'Hare shot down five Japanese Mitsubishi twin-engined bombers, bent on destroying the carrier. While O'Hare's squadron attacked the first wave of nine bombers, downing eight and chasing the ninth, O'Hare and his wing mate went after the second wave fifteen miles away. At 12,000 feet, as he was closing in for the fight, O'Hare's wingmate discovered that his guns were jammed and had to turn away, leaving O'Hare alone-one against nine. In five minutes O'Hare had sent five crashing in flames and had crippled the sixth, pulling away this time with his own guns jammed and only ten rounds of ammunition left. At this moment, his squadron leader and two companions arrived, polishing off two more Japs. Sea Power's cover painting by Lester Greer depicts the scene just at the split second when O'Hare's relief arrived on the scene, and O'Hare (foreground), his great job done, waved goodbye as his co-workers went in to finish the task he had so splendidly begun. On November 27, 1943, O'Hare, by that time a Lieutenant Commander, failed to return from an engagement fought against thirty or forty Japanese torpedo bombers which attempted to attack a U. S. carrier force in the Central Pacific at night. It is believed that O'Hare was shot down and crashed in the sea. ....... Articles Inside: ... Out of the Mail Buoy .....
