Notice especially that the howitzer crew wears helmets, but no shirts; No. 5 is on the job, to shift the trail; protective sandbags have been mottled, and also have leaves to break their regular outline; there is good cover from air observation; ammunition is stored nearby, apparently in pits or small caves; the trail has been dug in, perhaps by recoil; and finally, the men look trim and happy. ..... Carl Riede, of that outfit, writes: "The picture was taken the morning of 20 Feb 43, when the battery was in position just west of Kasserine Pass. We had been supporting a battalion of infantry at El Mac El Abiod (SE of Tebessa), but the afternoon of 19 Feb I received orders to rejoin the battalion in the vicinity of the pass. We left after dark, marched some 30-odd miles, and arrived there at about 0200 hrs. We were unable to find a good position area, so finally occupied position in four Arab houses of which the illustration shows one, modifying them slightly to meet our needs. The morning of the 20th at about 1100 hrs, German infantry and armor broke through and we were forced to fall back." ..... Articles: M-1 (Verse) By Sgt. George R. Else ..... Vol. 34 No. 4 ....... Cover: Britain's 4.5 Gun has proved to be one of this war's most dependable weapons. It was in its glory in Africa's open country, but even in the mountains of Sicily and Italy it has proved highly useful for accurate shooting at greater ranges than howitzers can fire. It does not, of course, have the range or punch of our 155-mm gun, M-1; on the other hand its lighter weight gives it greater mobility. The one shown on this month's cover is on the move in Italy.
